Dropout’s Superfan tier makes the subscription more expensive for fans who want to pay more

While some streaming services are hiking up prices overnight — hello, HBO Max — Dropout is doing something a little different: giving subscribers the option to pay more.

In a video shared Tuesday, Dropout CEO and Game Changer host Sam Reich announced a Superfan annual subscription to Dropout for $129.99, which is currently discounted to $97.49 for a limited time. It offers “Patreon-style perks,” such as bonus behind-the-scenes content, a 10% store discount, and access to exclusive merchandise. Reich cheekily addresses that, saying, “Yes, spend even more money.”

The Superfan tier stems from April’s announcement that the monthly cost for Dropout would rise by $1, but only for new subscribers only. Dropout is currently priced at $6.99 a month or $69.99 for an annual subscription, and customers who subscribed before May 7 are paying $5.99 a month.

According to Reich, the company received a curious response to that announcement. Long-time subscribers actually wanted to pay the updated price, or even more. Some spoke of canceling their subscription and resubscribing to be able to pay the higher price. Now, Dropout is looking to meet those subscribers where they’re at with the Superfan membership.

Reich is refreshingly candid in the announcement video, and says he likes that Dropout is affordable so that it can reach as many people as possible. He acknowledges producing Dropout’s content is getting more expensive and that the new Superfan membership will help finance future productions, which he teased will involve scripted and animated content.

Dropout and Reich have also always been pro-password-sharing, and continue to be. Reich speaks directly to those borrowing a friend’s account in the announcement, saying, “And those of you on a friend’s account, you arguably have the very best deal of all.”
