What Happens to Your Blood Pressure When You Drink Orange Juice Every Day

Orange juice often gets praise for its immune-supporting vitamin C content. It might offer other perks, too.  If you have high blood pressure, or want to help keep it in check, your morning OJ might be a smart choice.

One study from 2021 found that people with mildly high blood pressure saw improvements after drinking orange juice daily, possibly due to a plant compound called hesperidin. This bioflavonoid has been linked to heart health, including blood pressure regulation, in other studies as well.

However, not all studies have found strong connections between orange juice and lower blood pressure. Some found benefits for other heart-related measures, like cholesterol levels. Others suggest the positive effects may come not come from hesperidin, but from metabolites, the substances created when the body breaks down components of orange juice.

The type of orange juice, how much and how often you drink it, and other factors like your overall health, diet, metabolism, and even genetics, can influence how orange juice affects blood pressure.

Keep in mind that fruit juice lacks fiber and adds calories and sugar, which can be an issue if you’re managing conditions such as diabetes. And be careful if you take prescription medication: While orange juice isn’t as well-known as grapefruit for drug interactions, some studies suggest it can have similar effects.

If you’re unsure whether orange juice fits your health needs, check with your healthcare provider. Stick to an 8-ounce glass of 100% juice with no added sugar.
