We’ve researched and furnished our homes with sustainable pieces for years. These are our favorite tall dressers that are made with natural, nontoxic materials and will easily fit into small and vertical spaces.
Whether you live in a small space or one with lots of nooks and crannies, using every square inch of a home intentionally is vital. Using vertical space — like tall dressers that don’t take up as much floor space but still hold a lot — is a great way to maximize storage. We’ve rounded up tall dresser picks from some of our favorite furniture brands. Most of the dressers on this list are also made from solid wood, and they’re built to last and nontoxic — with the certifications to back it up.
Why choose a tall dresser?
Maybe you only have so much floor space in your apartment, or you have two kids sharing a bedroom and need to maximize all of the space you can. Whatever the reason, tall dressers are a helpful solution for maximizing storage in small spaces. Many of the dressers on this list have 4 or 5 drawers, giving you the same (or nearly the same) amount of storage space as a horizontal dresser, without the large footprint.
What should you look for when shopping for tall dressers?
Consider first the amount of space you do have. Be sure to measure the width of the area you’re putting the dresser in to ensure that it will fit. Then consider how tall you want it to be. Most tall dressers are 4 or 5 drawers. Next, consider the materials. Most of the dressers on this list are made from solid wood. For furniture like dressers, look for woods like maple, oak, or walnut, as these are most durable. Look at the construction of the dresser to see if it has sturdy construction, too. Consider purchasing dressers with solid joints instead of glue and nails, as these will hold up through more wear and tear, lasting longer.
In terms of shopping for sustainable tall dressers that are good for you, your home, and the planet, it’s best to look at the piece’s certifications. For tall dressers, look for the following certifications:
- GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification ensures that your dresser went through thorough testing and meets high standards for low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low chemical emissions into indoor air.
- FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies that wood and paper products are coming from forests that are managed responsibly.
- Fair Trade: The Fair Trade certification verifies that workers receive fair wages and work in ethical and safe conditions, that materials are ethically-sourced, and that the supply chain process is transparent.
How to care for your dresser:
Generally, caring for dressers is fairly simple, especially when you purchase one that’s made from high-quality and durable materials. If you need to clean your dresser, simply wipe away dust and dirt with a cloth as needed. If you feel the need to do a deeper cleaning, definitely check with the brand’s specific recommendations so you don’t ruin the wood or the finish.
One really important note with all dressers, but especially tall ones, is that you should bolt your dresser to the wall. Many dressers come with hardware to do this. This prevents the dresser from tipping, which could potentially harm children or pets if it fell.
Our criteria:
- Nontoxic & natural materials | The brands on this list use reclaimed or responsibly sourced wood. Not only are these dressers made with natural materials, but they’re also free from VOCs, formaldehyde, and other harsh chemicals.
- Ethical | These brands prioritize fair labor practices, handmade and artisan craftsmanship, and sustainable practices that support local economies.
- Affordable | We’ve included brands that offer investment pieces that last a lifetime, as well as more budget-friendly options.
