It’s no secret we’re big fans of making our beds with the best and most organic materials, including nontoxic pillows. But it’s not just our sleep we’re concerned about: We want to ensure our family members are sleeping well (and safely), too. This is especially the case for the littler ones in our home! Why are organic and nontoxic toddler pillows important?

While it may be challenging to get babies and kids to sleep, their little bodies need it. In fact, babies under one year old sleep upwards of 16 hours a day, which means what they are sleeping on is more important than ever.

Since many conventional pillows use a polyester filling derived from petroleum (shown to emit toxic VOCs), it’s essential to shop for natural and organic toddler pillows. Likewise, conventional pillows are coated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — known endocrine disruptors — for a fire retardant, and the production of polyester harms workers and the environment.

What should you look for when shopping for a toddler pillow?

When it comes to toddler pillows, it’s less about upgrading their sleep setup and more about choosing something that actually supports their little, still-developing bodies. Most kids don’t need a pillow until around age two, and when they do, the best option is a small, low-profile pillow that’s thin and gently supportive — nothing too fluffy or lofty that could throw off their neck alignment. Think of it as just enough cushion to keep them comfortable, without overdoing it.

Materials play a bigger role than you might expect, especially if your toddler has sensitive skin or allergies. Look for breathable, hypoallergenic, and non-toxic fabrics like organic cotton or wool, which help regulate temperature and reduce the chance of irritation or overheating. You’ll also want something durable and easy to wash (because spills, drool, and the occasional accident are basically guaranteed), ideally with a removable, machine-washable cover. And finally, pay attention to how well the pillow holds its shape over time — consistent, gentle support is key for healthy sleep, even at this early stage.
