Our editors have slept on dozens of nontoxic pillows over the years — these are our favorites for nontoxic wedge pillows that are comfortable for sleep, lounging, and sex.
Wedge pillows are all about your comfort. Whether you need a little extra support while sleeping or like to have a bolster to be more comfortable during sex, these pillows give you that little extra boost that can make all the difference. Many of the pillows on this list come in multiple heights, so you can pick the angle that works best for you, and several options give you a trial period so you can test it out and make sure it feels good before you commit. So if you’re angling to get some extra-supportive Zzz’s — or O’s 😉— check out this list of our faves.
What are the benefits of using a wedge pillow?
Wedge pillows are versatile and can offer many benefits based on how you use them. Sleeping in a slightly inclined position can be helpful for snoring, sleep apnea, circulation, congestion, and back pain. They are also great for those of us who like to read or work from the couch or in bed, because it provides back support while you sit up and/or lean.
For sex, wedge pillows are great supports for making certain positions more comfortable, helping you hit angles that feel good, and/or can help those with mobility difficulties prop themselves up during sex. While you can use regular pillows for this purpose, the high-density foam in the wedge pillows on this list allows for firmer support and extra comfort. Many of the pillows on this list also have optional waterproof covers, so if you’re planning to use it for sex, consider purchasing one of those to keep your pillow protected.
How to use a wedge pillow:
Simply put, use the angles of the pillow to help you get comfy — whether that’s to sleep, lounge, or have sex. The beauty of these pillows is that they’re incredibly versatile, so you can play with the different angles they offer to help you feel your best. For sleeping, some reviews noted that it might take a while to get used to the pillow. But if you have prolonged discomfort, consider trying a different height, because that can make all the difference.
For sex, wedge pillows can be used any way that feels comfortable for you, but the most common use is placing the pillow under the hips or butt. Sometimes all it takes is a little lift in the right place to turn a good night into a well-elevated adventure. Need some ideas? Here are a few to get you started — or finishing. 😉
What to consider when shopping for a wedge pillow:
Wedge pillows come in different heights and sizes, so finding one that works best for your needs can take a bit of guesswork. You might have to try a few out to get the right angle/height for your comfort. Thankfully, many of these have multi-night trial periods for you to make sure you like it and it’s working well for you.
Another important consideration is the materials your wedge pillow is made of. Look for materials like natural latex, CertiPur US certified foam, and natural textile covers like linen, cotton, or wool. Not only are natural textiles more comfortable, but nontoxic and natural materials are also important for avoiding dangerous chemical exposure. Traditional manufacturing processes often emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which diffuse into the air and can be toxic to human health. Definitely not something you want to sleep or have sex on! Thankfully, there are lots of natural and nontoxic options, like the ones in this guide, that are certified by third-party verifications that ensure their products are made without VOCs and other harmful toxins.
Here are a few certifications relevant to wedge pillows:
- CertiPUR-US: This certifies that the foam used is made without flame retardants, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates, and other toxic chemicals. It also guarantees low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions.
- GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): This third-party certification ensures rubber latex products are sustainably processed and are made with at least 95% certified organic raw material.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This means that at least 95% of a product’s materials — like the cotton or wool cover on your pillow — are certified organic. This includes the entire production process, from harvesting to weaving and finishing.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: This ensures that every component of the wedge pillow — from the fabric to the zippers — is tested and free from over 100 toxic chemicals.

Customer Review | “I just received my wedge pillow, and it’s exactly what I wanted… works very well for sleeping on an incline, is made from good ecological materials, and is well made. However…..I’m appalled at the packaging as it consists of oodles of heavy plastic wrapped around the pillow – I suspect they are trying to protect it as it goes through shipping, but it seems a good, strong cardboard box would be sufficient. I do like the pillow very much, just wish the environmental effort was a bit more successful.” – Diane T. [Read more reviews.]
