It’s graphic, bright, and will stand out,” he adds. “I especially love it on brown eyes because the contrast is so strong.”

Who Does Blue Mascara Look Good On?
While there are certain eye colors that especially pop when paired with blue mascara (ahem, brown!), there are no rules at all when it comes to this whimsical mascara color. “A cobalt mascara paired with brown eyes is an incredible combination due to the contrast—it makes the different tones of the brown stand out,” Briceno explains. He also credits hazel and deep blue eyes as fun pairings, as bright blue can bring out different shades within the irises. He does, however, suggest a bit of contrast when it comes to blue eyes.
“Light blue eyes look beautiful paired with dark navy for a polished look, but cobalt on blue eyes can also look intentionally monochromatic,” he adds. “Green eyes look great with navy, blue-violet, or even teal.” He reminds us that “these are guides, not rules,” and that hair, skin, and eye color do not define what “works” for you.
How Can You Make Blue Mascara Stand Out?
Sometimes, it can be hard to build the color of your blue mascara up to a noticeable shade. Lucky for us, there’s a makeup artist–approved trick that can get the most out of your color without applying layer on top of layer. “My longtime trick—particularly on darker lashes—is to begin with Lancome Cils Booster XL Lash Primer,” says Quinn. “The white base helps a blue mascara look much brighter and more true to color,” he adds. “I apply the mascara while the primer is still slightly tacky rather than allowing it to dry.”

Briceno also recommends toying with the color’s intensity. “Decide how blue you actually want it to look—sometimes subtle, only-showing-when-light-hits [color] feels like a little secret in the makeup,” he muses. His suggestion? A lash balayage. “Keeping the roots dark and adding more blue through the middle and ends still gives definition close to the eye, [but] the blue becomes more obvious as the lashes move,” Briceno instructs. “And don’t forget the tops and sides of the lashes, too.”

- Coat the tips: “If you coat only the tips of the lashes, it gives a beautiful pop of color—especially from the side or when blinking,” says Quinn. “I prefer to let the mascara be the main focus by keeping the shadow and liner subdued.”
- Brown smoky eye: “For daytime, use taupes and soft brown [eye shadows],” Quinn instructs. “For evening, adding a deep brown shadow and liner creates a sophisticated smoky eye. You can add more color and depth depending on the mood, particularly if you want to really maximize the eyes.”
- Pair with blue eyeliner: If you want to lean into the blue theme of it all, try enhancing your mascara with a matching blue eyeliner, à la Marc Jacobs’s S/S 27 runway looks. “In a way, it’s very New York, the girl that works uptown during the day then goes downtown at night,” key makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver said of the monochromatic look.
