The Best CC Creams for Mature Skin, According to Celebrity Makeup Artists

While foundation can cover imperfections and lend a hint of dewiness to dull skin, the best CC cream for mature skin provides color correction—and a host of other benefits—as well. “CC creams are great for mature skin,” says celebrity makeup artist Julianne Kaye, whose clients include 52-year-old Toni Collette and 65-year-old Emma Thompson. “They provide coverage, hydration, and anti-aging benefits.”

As such, it’s worth considering CC creams as either a base for foundation—or as a one-and-done product for light coverage and antioxidant protection in the morning (provided, of course, that the formula contains SPF.) As with any product, choosing the right one for your beauty bag requires a bit of critical analysis.

“It’s important to ask yourself what type of skin you have,” Kaye says. “Are you looking for oil-free or super hydrating? What kind of finish are you looking for? There are so many great options out there but I would look for one that addresses all your needs.”

Handpicked by celebrity makeup artists, the CC creams below represent the, ahem, crème de la crème for mature skin, offering even coverage, a boost in radiance, and plenty more.

Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream

  • Why We Love It: Celebrity makeup artist Chelsea Roach says that Clinique’s CC cream “packs a real punch with hydration—and as we all know, skin loses hydration as we age.” Formulated with squalane, glycerin, and activated aloe water, the oil-free cream is gentle on sensitive skin—it’s allergy-tested, non-comedogenic, and fragrance-free. “It is incredibly hydrating but since it’s oil-free you won’t have that ‘greasy’ finish,” Roach notes. Also enhanced with SPF 30, the tint is a perfect pick for medium coverage in the daytime.
  • Key Ingredients: Sunscreens (octinoxate, octisalate, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide), squalane, activated aloe water, caffeine, glycerin
  • Shades: 5
  • Finish: Natural
  • Size: 1.4 oz

IT Cosmetics CC+ Full Coverage Cream

  • Why We Love It: Infused with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin E, “This is one of the bestselling CC creams on the market,” Roach says. “It’s a full-coverage [tint] with SPF 50 —that’s hard to beat!” Celebrity makeup artist Kasey Spickard backs up the product’s buzz. “This is one of the most talked-about, popular CC creams on the market,” he says. “It boasts incredibly high coverage—enough to cover rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and discoloration—and it still has a natural, skin-like finish.” Kaye adds to the chorus of praise. “This is an industry go-to,” she affirms. “It’s something my fellow makeup artists and I use on ourselves because it wears so naturally and looks great. It truly is the holy grail when it comes to CC creams that provide skincare and anti-aging benefits and buildable coverage. I also love how high the SPF is.”

Part of his toolkit for providing a lit-from-within glow, Erborian’s CC creams impart the radiant finish he’s after. Roach is also a fan of the K-beauty formula. “Korean skincare is all the rage, and for good reason,” she says. “This CC cream is so beautiful. It’s powered by an ingredient called Centella asiatica which is known for its soothing properties. It also has SPF 25 for sun protection.” Kaye adds: “I love how this adjusts to your skin tone and gives a nice, luminous glow. I often use this as a primer for women with sensitive, mature skin.”

Everything You Need to Know

“A CC cream focuses on color correction, meaning it helps neutralize redness, sallowness, or uneven skin tone,” Roach says. “It typically has medium coverage for discoloration, and may also include anti-aging ingredients and SPF.”

Is a BB Cream or a CC Cream better for mature skin?

According to Roach, BB (or “blemish balm”) creams and CC creams are both great options for mature skin, but they serve different purposes. “A BB cream provides light to medium coverage while offering skincare benefits like hydration, SPF, and antioxidants,” she explains. “It evens out skin tone but doesn’t specifically target color correction the way a CC cream does.”

How to Choose a CC Cream for Mature Skin

Spickard explains that mature skin tends to be on the dryer, more dull side; it can also be uneven due to hypo- and hyperpigmentation. “To pick the right CC Cream, you need to identify your needs,” Spickard says. “Are you trying to correct redness and rosacea, melasma, dark spots, or all of the above? Once you know what you are trying to correct you can find the right product to help you with your skin-care concerns. However, above all, you want something with hydration and radiance.” In terms of coverage, he recommends choosing a formula that evens out the skin tone, while “still looking like skin.”

How to Apply a CC Cream for Mature Skin

“With CC creams I often find using your fingers is best,” Spickard says. “Apply a few dots to the back of the hand and swirl your finger into the product to warm it up. Then dab onto the face starting in the center and working your way out using small circular motions.” Next, Spickard recommends tapping additional product onto any areas that need more coverage, with one caveat. “I find going lighter around the crow’s feet and fine lines helps prevent creasing and prevents the product from settling [into the lines] throughout the day,” he says.
