At Obvio’s Opening Night, the Party Was Only Getting Started

Between layers of thumping disco and tropical cocktails (Tamarind Mezcalita, anyone?) newcomer hotspot Obvio threw open its doors for a festive introduction to the New York dining scene.

From Juan Santa Cruz, the mind behind Casa Cruz, and a culinary program by chef John Fraser, comes a Latin-inspired space that builds a sensual world of rich accents and an array of delectable snacks.

“There was a lot of love and care put into the details,” Santa Cruz said, watching the party pick up steam as the event began. “My dream is always that you’ll wake up after and think, ‘Wow! That was fun.’” Judging by the lingering revelry that stretched late in the night, that mission was steadily accomplished.

A mixture of the city’s cultural set across sectors showed out for the evening—from artists Lucien Smith and Lorenzo Amos, to fashion’s Lauren Santo Domingo, Talita von Fürstenberg, Sabine Getty, and Angelica Hicks.

With flourishes such as spherical, yellow-light lamps and a giraffe print sourced from artisans around the globe, the space exudes an eclectic warmth, balancing elegance with a touch of the unexpected.

Red-jumpsuited servers carried silver trays of bites, including an alluring taste of what’s to come at Obvio (expect fluke ceviche, tuna tartare tacos, a shrimp and uni flatbread, and more). DJs parsed out the energy of the room, building a crescendo of dance-forward classics and energetic bass as the crowd swayed under the golden glow of the evening.

The atmosphere lived on through the night as glasses clinked and the team mingled with their guests on the establishment’s first tour of fun—like a great melody or a well-told story, pulling partiers back for more.
