Steven Dubois wins 3 races to highlight Canada’s 6-medal Sunday at short track worlds


Canada’s men’s short track relay team joined its women counterparts on the top of the speed skating podium, one of three gold in a six-medal haul Sunday at at the ISU world championships in Beijing.

Canada, which earned four medals on Saturday, won the most events outright at worlds for the first time since 1994, according to NBC Sports.

William Dandjinou, Steven Dubois, Maxime Laoun and Felix Roussel posted a time of six minutes 41.271 seconds over 5,000 metres, followed by China (6:41.840) and South Korea (6:41.891).

Canada’s men skate to 5,000m relay gold in Beijing

Maxime Laoun, Felix Roussel, Steven Dubois, and William Dandjinou beat out China and Korea to the top podium at the short track worlds.

Courtney Sarault, Rikki Doak, Florence Brunelle and Kim Boutin were victorious in the women’s 3,000 relay on Saturday.

Dubois of Terrebonne, Que., also prevailed in the men’s 1,000m, clocking 1:23.348 in a 1-2 finish with Montreal’s Dandjinou (1:23.352).

Steven Dubois and William Dandjinou photo finish the 1,000m to take gold and silver

Steven Dubois of Terrebonne, Que., narrowly edged Montreal’s William Dandjinou by .004 seconds to claim gold at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

Sunday’s relay win was the third of the day for Dubois, who captured the mixed relay with Boutin, Brunelle and Danjinou in 2:36.232 over Italy (2:36.619).

A day earlier, Dubois captured gold in the men’s 500.

Doak and Sarault collected individual silver on Sunday in the 500 and 1,500.

Doak, who hails from Fredericton, crossed the finish line in 42.286. Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands was victorious in 42.132.

Montreal’s Rikki Doak wins silver in the 500m at short track worlds

Rikki Doak finished just 0.154 seconds from the top of the podium at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Beijing.

Sarault, from Moncton, N.B., reached the finish in 2:27.194 behind South Korea’s Minjeong Choi (2:27.136).
