Since she left the White House in 2016, Malia Obama has largely remained out of the public eye, quietly starting her career as a writer and director. (Her debut short film, “The Heart,” screened at Sundance and Deauville.) But while we still may not know much about the former first daughter, we can confidently say that she’s got style.
Obama has long embraced the tenets of Gen Z style, leaning into patterns, power clashing, and baggy silhouettes, eschewing the general put-togetherness of business-casual-loving Millennials. We’ve seen her rock long jorts with Birkenstocks Boston clogs and formal plaid separates.

Over the weekend, Obama modeled her most oversized look to date. Spotted in Los Angeles, the filmmaker wore an asymmetrical charcoal gray blazer with extreme shoulder pads, which she layered over a white button-up. While others may choose to abide by the “big top, little pants” method, Obama kept her entire look oversized, pairing her boxy blazer with distressed light-wash blue jeans.
Obama’s accessories were just as cool. A fan of a lug-sole stomper, she traded in her boots for a pair of springy black leather mules. And, while she wore a pair of white over-ear headphones, we have no doubt they’d be able to fit inside her plaid SC103 crossbody bag from SSENSE.
While warmer weather is fast upon us, Malia Obama is making a case for the oversized look all year round.
