This Memorial Day holiday weekend was a big test for the future of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise on the big screen. And while ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ couldn’t quite match the heights of its Disney/Lucasfilm stablemates, it did earn a decent amount, launching top of the box office with an impressive $82 million domestically (though official final figures won’t arrive until tomorrow given the four-day time scale.)

Elsewhere, it was a good weekend for horror as ‘Obsession’ held strong in second place with $22.4 million while new arrival ‘Passenger’ arrived sixth with $10 million.
On the holdover front, ‘Michael’ continues to perform at the box office, adding $20 million, while ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ was fourth with $12.6 million.
Director Boots Riley’s latest, ‘I Love Boosters’, had to make do with $4.7 million in eighth.
