A routine domestic flight turned into an unexpected diversion on Friday after a disabled aircraft temporarily shut down a runway at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (ABQ). Delta Air Lines flight 1109, carrying 178 passengers and six crew members, was forced to divert to Farmington Four Corners Regional Airport (FMN) after being unable to land in Albuquerque. According to airline officials, the diversion occurred because another aircraft experienced a mechanical issue on the runway, leaving DL1109 with insufficient fuel to continue holding overhead.

The incident unfolded on Friday and briefly disrupted operations at ABQ. Passenger accounts and airport statements later revealed that a general aviation aircraft had reportedly lost a wheel after takeoff or landing, forcing the closure of Runway 8-26 while crews cleared the area. Although the closure reportedly lasted only around 15 minutes, it was enough to force the inbound Delta flight to abandon its approach and head north to Farmington instead.

Diversion Triggered By Runway Closure

DL1109 was nearing the end of its journey into Albuquerque when the situation developed. As reported by KOAT, Delta passenger Jeanette Ashby, told the news outlet that the aircraft had already begun its landing sequence before pilots suddenly initiated a go-around. The aircraft briefly circled the airport while crews worked to clear the disabled plane from the runway safety area.

The diversion decision ultimately came down to fuel reserves. After holding for a short period above Albuquerque, the crew determined that continuing to wait for the runway to reopen was no longer practical. The Boeing 737-900ER aircraft instead diverted to Farmington, approximately 140 miles northwest of Albuquerque, where it landed safely without further incident.

Ashby later described the situation from the passenger’s perspective, explaining that travelers were informed about the runway issue while airborne.

Airport officials later clarified that the disabled aircraft involved was a general aviation plane that experienced a mechanical issue after landing at the Sunport. According to Albuquerque International Sunport spokesperson Diana Lopez, the aircraft landed safely and crews removed it from the runway safety area before operations resumed.

Passengers Faced Hours Of Delays In Farmington

Although the diversion itself lasted only a short time in the air, passengers ultimately experienced several hours of disruption on the ground. After arriving at Four Corners Regional Airport, travelers remained in Farmington while Delta coordinated transportation back to Albuquerque.

According to the airline, passengers were provided with food during the delay before eventually boarding buses for the trip south to Albuquerque. While diversions are relatively common in commercial aviation, those caused by sudden runway closures can pose significant logistical challenges for both airlines and airports, especially when the alternate airport has limited passenger-handling infrastructure.

Data from Flightradar24 showed that the aircraft later departed Farmington and returned to Albuquerque International Sunport later that evening without passengers onboard. The repositioning flight allowed Delta to restore the aircraft to its planned operational network after the disruption.

Temporary runway closures often create a ripple effect throughout airport operations. Even a brief closure can force inbound flights into holding patterns or diversions, particularly during busy operational periods when multiple aircraft are arriving within narrow time windows. In this case, the closure reportedly lasted approximately 15 minutes, which was still enough to affect at least one commercial arrival.

Commercial flights are required to carry contingency fuel reserves that account for delays, go-arounds, alternate airports, and unforeseen circumstances. For DL1109, the decision to divert appears to have been precautionary and fully aligned with standard airline operating procedures. Rather than risk fuel reserves dropping below required levels while awaiting runway availability, the crew opted to proceed directly to an alternate airport.
